DBA Online’s 5th Anniversary Gala

American DBAOnline successfully held the 3rd large-scale, public technical seminar of year 2004 (1:00 – 5:30 PM) and the 5th Anniversary Gala (6:00 – 11:00 PM) on Nov.13, 2004 at Clarion Hotel & Towers,Edison , New Jersey . With DBAOnline committee’s tremendous efforts and the enthusiastic supports from our members, speakers, and many sponsors, they were the biggest and most successful events ever.

Nearly 150 members and other IT professionals attended the afternoon’s technical seminar. Committee VP Mr. Yi Han hosted the event. Mr. David Wang, the president and founder of DBAOnline organization, gave the opening remarks and highlighted DBAOnline’s accomplishments in year 2004.

We were lucky and pleased to have industry experts to speak on various leading-edge database technologies at this seminar. It was not the first time that Oracle 10g new features for DBAs were covered by our seminars. However, this time, we again invited a well-known speaker - Ms. Jennifer Leung, a principal consultant from Oracle Corporation to talk about Oracle 10g Grid computing and new features from a different angle and depth. Ms. Leung elaborated the Grid computing concept, Oracle 10g features and how Oracle features enable the Grid computing infrastructure. Grid computing is making a significant impact on IT and the business world. This was a great opportunity for attendees to learn Oracle 10g features and Grid computing.

For years, DBAs have been anticipating improved performance and more flexibility from Oracle’s exp/imp utilities. Oracle 10g introduces Data Pump which revolutionizes how data dumping and loading work. We invited a renowned speaker Indy Johal from PR Newswire to share his expertise with us again. Mr. Johal dog-and-pony showed the new Export & Import features and the new DBMS_DATAPUMP package interface of Oracle 10g. His presentation focused on the architecture behind the Oracle 10g Data Pump and discussed how data could be transferred from earlier releases to 10g and vice versa by using the new import & export features. Mr. Joe Leslie from Quest Software which is a frequent sponsor for the seminars, showed us how to maximize the application performance in a demanding Oracle environment.  He demonstrated how Performance Analysis of Quest Central could better equip DBAs to monitor and understand database workload requirements in today's high volume application environments.

Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) has been widely accepted and implemented to achieve high availability, scalability and performance. Mr. Lawrence Ng from Etagon gave a unique presentation on RAC. In addition to an overview on RAC, Mr. Ng gave a live demo on how to build a complete RAC within 45 minutes! Etagon also sponsored the seminar and brought an iPod for raffle. A lucky winner from the audience took home the latest and greatest iPod. On the heels of the afternoon technical seminar, it came the relaxing and fun part of the day. While people were enjoying cocktails and networking with each other in the hotel’s VIP room, our committee members were in full swing to decorate up the ballroom for the evening gala.

Around 7:00PM, the 5th anniversary gala of DBAOnline was unveiled when Mr. Ning Li, a celebrity host and journalist of the New Jersey Chinese community, announced the start of the celebration.  The glittering ballroom at Clarion Hotel & Towers was packed with more than 150 smiling VIPs, guests, friends and members. Ms. April Cai of our committee joined the host force to represent the DBAOnline characteristic. First, Mr. David Wang, the president of DBAOnline, went over the proud history of DBAOnline organization. It started out in 1999 as a club called “DW Club” with about 50 DBAs working in the Wall Street area. Since then, it has experienced steady growth year after year. Now it has evolved into an organization that has more than 800 registered members across 16 states in the U.S. Although the IT market experienced its toughest time in these years, the growth of the organization was strong nevertheless. David attributed the accomplishments to the dedication of DBAOnline committee members and the generous support from vendors, media and other communities. To show the organization’s great appreciation for the extra mile that they had gone through in the past five years, David presented plaques to the valuable contributors who included Mr. Jason Cheng, owner of Clarion Hotel, Mrs. Grace Fan, our long-time accountant, Ms. Jennifer Leung and Mr. Indy Johal, our honored speakers, and Mr. Kirby Tan, our printing & designing specialist. Mr. Jingshen Dong, the science & technology counsellor of consulate general of the People’s Republic of China in New York expressed his gladness for seeing so many Chinese IT professionals living happily and decently here in a foreign land. Mr. Shing-Fu Hsueh, the mayor of West Windsor township used the success story of DBAOnline to call upon all present to get more involved with better serving the local communities. Dr. Zhaobo Wang, member of Board of Education of Edison township, also eagerly congratulated DBAOnline on its 5th birthday. During the dinner, Mr. Warren Yang of our committee presented the guests with his funny slide shows and hosted his trade-mark quick-wit quizs. The quiz winners were rewarded with lots of chocolates. There were also 3 rounds of raffles which brought roaring excitement to the crowd and broad smiles to the lucky winners. Many valuable gifts such as $500 shopping certificate, VIP tickets to Yao Ming’s basketball game, Atlantic City hotel tickets, USB flash drives, MP3 player, color photo printer, XBOX, etc. were generously donated by many local merchants and doctors who included: DCH Auto Group, Joyce Huang from AXA Advisors, Nie Hong from Prudential Financial, Mrs. Liqun Wang from Bank of American, Hong Jin from Royal Blue, Dr. Lijin Shen, Dr. Aijuan Wang, Dr. Howard Kuo, Spencer Li, Yi Chen, etc. The evening party entertainment was climaxed with professional singing and dancing performances by Ms. Tina Shao and Mr. Jiang Xie from New York, Mr. Wei Chen, Ms. Hong Jin and Ms. Jinjin Chen. Dr. Zhaobo Wang and his clan (Dr. Howard Kuo, Spencer Li and Lawyer Mr. Jiwei Zhao) delivered a surprise comedy show – “Three and Half Sentences” to praise David and DBAOnline’s achievements. It turned out to be so hilarious that it even brought tears to many audiences’ eyes. After the hearty dinner and with the contagious festive atmosphere, the evening wouldn’t conclude without all-hands group dancing. People poured onto the dancing floor and had more self-entertainment after being entertained. It was truly a wonderful night filled with fun and memorable moments. It could only be achieved through meticulous planning, lots of efforts and teamwork. Happy Birthday DBAOnline! We wish DBAOnline organization continued success and another banner year in 2005!
