Time yet again, American DBA Online held an
extremely successful technical seminar on April 06, 2002 at the Hilton hotel
in Woodbridge, NJ. The seminar was attended by over 250 Oracle DBAs from
various industries and companies in the tri-state area.
This seminar was
composed of five presentations given by the industry experts and covered the
following subject areas: commercially off-the-shelf tools for Oracle DBAs,
opportunities and challenges for the China software industry, server high
availability, and Oracle 9i new features. The presentations were arranged in
such a way that they were well balanced with highly technical and relatively
less technical topics. The
audiences enjoyed the presentations and the get-togethers with their old and
new friends during breaks.
The first
presentation was given by Mr. Louis Pulido from BMC Software. He
demonstrated the BMC Enterprise tools for Oracle DBAs including Patrol for
Oracle, Space Expert, Patrol DBXray and WebDBA. He showed how effective
these tools are and yet how easy and user-friendly they are to use. While we were at the tools topic,
Mr. David Wang from YoungTech, Inc. demonstrated their company’s product
line: DBA*Plus Online, DBA*Plus Manager and DBA*Plus Wireless. They were
very proud of and the audiences were impressed by the DBA*Plus Wireless
product which empowers Oracle DBAs to administer their databases anywhere,
anytime.
In order to
minimize IT costs, many US corporations have started or are in the process
of evaluating the offshore solutions.
Some Asian countries, such as China and India, are considered the
prime providers of such offshore services. Youngtech, Inc. headquartered in
Edison, NJ is an active player of the China offshore market.
Youngtech’s vice president of
marketing and sales - Mr. Bob Nylund introduced his company to the audience.
The founder, Chairman and CEO of Youngtech, Inc. – Mr. John Yeung presented
his research results and findings of the current market conditions and
resources of China and India, and made insightful comparisons of these two
major markets. He also elaborated on the opportunities and challenges of the
China software industry, especially with China’s recent entry into
WTO.
Mr. Brian Gao
from Qwest Communications made an overview of the high availability/cluster
technologies. This highly technical topic was made so easy to understand by
Brian due to his expertise in this area and his extensive teaching
experiences. Brian also teaches Unix administration classes part-time at
ICT.
Last but not the
least, the president of American DBA Online – Mr. David Wang made a
presentation on the Oracle9i new features and functionalities for DBAs. With
his expertise in this technical area and his “Gold Medal” teaching
experience, David’s presentation was concise yet very illustrative. In his
personal opinion, Data Guard and Real Application Cluster (RAC) are
considered the two breakthrough features of Oracle9i.
The four and
half hours passed by so quickly and unnoticeably. The audiences’ interests
didn’t abate till the end of the seminar. They continued on with the Q &
A session with the speakers and amongst themselves. They expressed that it
was more than worthwhile to attend such a technical seminar on a Saturday
afternoon. This speaks volumes
about their dedication to both the organization and the improvement of their
careers.
The next DBA
Online seminar is tentatively scheduled for June 15, 2002. We look
forwarding to seeing you all there soon.
