American DBA Online Seminar on latest Oracle
Technology
American DBA Online’s Spring
2008 Seminar was held at Hilton Hotel Woodbridge in Edison, New Jersey
on May 17, 2008. Over 150 DBA Online members and IT professionals attended the
seminar for the keynote speech by the world-renowned Oracle expert, Mr. Tom
Kyte, and to hear presentations by famous speakers Mr
Madhu Tumma and Mr. Mattew Zito.
Mr. John Zhong, hosting for the
meeting, introduced the founder and president of DBA Online, Mr. David
Wang, for an opening remarks. Mr. Wang briefly went over DBA Online’s nine year history. He then went on to thank
Kim Marie Mancusi and Oracle Corporation for
their continuous support and sponsorship to DBA Online, and GridApp’s sponsorship for this event, as well as the
speakers for sharing new technology to the members. As always, Mr. Wang
gave “One Minute Tips” on RMAN merged database backup feature.
The well anticipated keynote speech
was given by Mr. Tom Kyte. Kyte is the Tom behind the AskTom column in Oracle Magazine, answering peoples’
questions about the Oracle database and its tools
(http://asktom.oracle.com/). Kyte is also the author of Expert Oracle
Database Architecture, Expert One on One Oracle, Beginning Oracle Programming,
and Effective Oracle by Design. Mr. Kyte presented top 10 features of
Oracle 11g. Audience learned the key features of 11g with his in-depth
explanation and examples. The keynote lasted over an hour and a half, and the
Q&A was well extended after the break.
The following
presentation was given by the well-known speaker, Mr. Madhu
Tumma, from Bear Stearns. Madhu is a frequent speaker at Oracle World and IOUG.
He is also the author of several books, like Oracle Streams, Oracle 9i RAC,
Oracle 10g Grid and RAC, Oracle 10g New Features, and 11g Grid and RAC. In
this seminar, Mr.Tumma presented Standby in RAC
Environment and Broker based Operations. This is an interesting and unique
topic because we usually have RAC on primary, not on Standby. The
presentation covered benefits of Standby in RAC environment and broker
based operations.
Next to speak was Mr. Mattew Zito from GridApp. Mr. Zito is an expert in large-scale infrastructures, with
extensive experience in designing and deploying some of the world's largest
system, network, and application architectures. Mr. Zito
presented a tool by GridApp that can simplify RAC
installation, deployment and management. Ms. April Cai
presented a customer case to demonstrate that such a tool can indeed help
make management of a complex environment easier.
Oracle Corporation brought several Oracle books for
raffles, including Mr. Tom Kyte’s Expert Oracle
Database Architecture with his signature, OCP exam and Oracle Security
books. Three lucky winners each took home one of the books.
The four hour seminar was attended by enthusiastic IT
professionals, who were fully engaged in the presentations and networking.
DBA Online thanks
all the speakers, Sponsor Oracle Corp. and GridApp,
in addition to all the guests and members for their effort and involvement
to make another DBA Online seminar a huge success.
